Testimony That Moves People to Action
Nehemiah 2:18; Acts 4:31-33
As we continue in this period of seeking the Lord through fasting and prayer, this study through Nehemiah has been giving us a glimpse into the life of a man and a people who put their trust and hope in the God of heaven to lead, guide, and help them execute the vision that had been given to them.
Behind this vision and mission given to Nehemiah is the testimony of God Almighty, whose hand was upon Nehemiah and upon the vision he had been given. You might be wondering how he was so sure and confident that the hand of the Lord was upon him. Prior devotions have documented his prayers and those of others with him (Nehemiah 1:4-11) to the Lord, even before he met the king. The evidence of the Lord’s hand upon him was made clear before the king when he did not lose his job or his life for appearing sad in the king’s presence. It was also evident in the king granting his request.
There is no greater testimony than to know that the gracious hand of our God is upon us, and with that comes the authority to go and execute the work of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. As the Bible says, “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will” (Proverbs 21:1). Having a good or even a great idea to do good or great things is noble and well commended. However, many people have had great ideas that resulted in nothing. “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1a). The testimony of the gracious hand of God and the king’s word were the kind of testimony that the people of God could bank on and depend on.
This is the kind of testimony that moves people to action. When Nehemiah shared the clear evidence of God’s goodness and the king’s support, the people didn’t hesitate or demand a detailed blueprint before moving forward. Their response was immediate and unified: “Let us rise up and build.” Though they didn’t know every detail of what lay ahead or all that it would take, they were deeply convinced of God’s hand behind the vision. So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
We see this same pattern in the early church after Peter and John were arrested for preaching and healing in the name of Jesus. They were charged not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. They did not allow fear to hold them back from the mission committed to their hands. In Acts 4:31-33, after the apostles prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. With great power, they continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s grace was powerfully at work in them all. When God’s people witness His power and presence, fear gives way to faith, and passive listening turns into shared commitment. The testimony of God’s grace creates a holy momentum that draws others into the work.
As we seek the Lord through fasting and prayer, we are invited to look beyond our human plans and strategies. We need to allow His Spirit to open our eyes to His will, His vision, and His mission for us as individuals and corporately as a church. When we share what God is doing and anchor our hope in His gracious hand, He aligns our hearts and strengthens our hands to step out in faithful obedience together.
