I absolutely love the Christmas season! From the many wonderful family traditions to the sweet sounds of beloved Christmas carols, Christmas time is definitely one of the fondest to my heart. My favorite part about Christmas though, that never seems to get old is the awe and wonder of celebrating Christ’s birth. Yes, that seems like an everyday thing to celebrate during this season but to genuinely sit back and reflect on this sweet time is astounding. The Advent season always seems to come and go but the great truth and hope of Christ never diminishes.
This truth never ceases to amaze me and it never ceases to humbly remind me of my dependence on the Lord. Without Him and without sending Christ here to this Earth to ultimately die for the sins of this world, Christmas would have far less meaning to it.
Recently in my own personal devotion time, I have been reading through a study with the sound reminder that Jesus is far better than anyone and anything in this world. Nothing and no one could accomplish what Jesus accomplished. It had to be Him that came to this Earth as a baby, walked through this life, and died on the cross. And yet, how quickly I forget this in the midst of the hustle and bustle of this holiday. We may not have had the opportunity to witness that blessed hope in person that Christmas night, but we should never forget to rejoice in the far bigger reason as to why we celebrate Christmas! I think about the story of Abraham. He was promised descendants beyond the number of the stars (Genesis 15:5) and yet he never saw this blessed hope come to completion in his lifetime, however he continued to walk by faith. Hundreds of years later, Jesus made references to Abraham and his faith.
In John 8:56, Jesus says, “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
His faith, his dependence on the Lord did not waiver because the hope was not physically at hand. And I can’t help but meditate on this truth this Christmas season. Let us be glad in the Christmas season and rejoice in the hope that we know is secure. May we never lose the awe and wonder of what this season truly is about and may we encompass our hearts and mind on that truth.
