In our series RECalibrate for this new year, we have been taking at look at the letters from Jesus to the 7 churches in Revelation 2-3. Letter 2 went to the church at Smyrna. Jesus told them, “When facing ridicule, scorn, slander, or opposition for standing up for the cause of Christ, be…
FEARLESS and FAITHFUL!
“Do not fear what you are about to suffer… Be faithful unto death.” (Revelation 2:10, ESV)
What does fearless look like?
A hot ticket at the theater right now is not just The Last Jedi but The Greatest Showman. One song that’s especially powerful is “This is Me.“ Some of the more colorful characters – many of whom some would call “misfits” (like the bearded lady) – were not invited to an extravagant party. But they came anyway.
Below are words from the song that they sung. Listen for the fearlessness.
Another round of bullet hits my skin
Well, fire away cause today, I won’t let this shame sink inWe are bursting through the barricadesAnd reaching for the sunWe are warriorsYeah, that’s what we’ve becomeWon’t let them break me down to dustI know that there’s a place for usFor we are gloriousWhen the sharpest words wanna cut me downGoing to send a flood, going to drown them outI am brave, I am bruisedI am whom I meant to be, this is meLook out cause here I comeAnd I marching on to the beat I drumI’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me.
We need to be this fearless! In the film, these characters are seeking to be fearless for themselves. But we are seeking to be fearless for him. For Jesus! We sing not, “This is me!“ We sing, “This is He!“
Whenever you hear that song – whenever you see that film – we can remember this message: We who follow Him need to be more fearless and more faithful than anyone, anywhere, any time.
